This video will show you how to convert between all three forms of numbers. It’s one of my longer videos, so I included a “cheat sheet” at the beginning to tell you where to skip to if you’re just looking for one specific type of conversion.
In this video I show you how to convert to fraction and percentage when given a decimal, to decimal and fraction when given a percentage, and to decimal and percentage when given a fraction.

Hey everyone! I’ve got everyone’s favorite math topic today — percents, decimals, and fractions.

Yay! …Okay, I know, not really. But I’m going to show you how to convert between all three of these.

First, really quick, let’s talk about what these even are.

The word percent actually means “out of 100.”
- “Per” means out of,
- and “cent” means 100.
So when we’re finding a percent, we’re really figuring out how much out of 100.

Decimals are labeled by place values, which actually makes our life easier when converting.
- The first place after the decimal is the tenths.
- Then hundredths.
- Then thousandths.
And it keeps going — ten-thousandths, hundred-thousandths — just like on the other side of the decimal point.

And of course, a fraction just tells us how many we’re counting out of a total.
Finding a Fraction or Percent from a Decimal

Alright, let’s start with converting a decimal.

Here’s an easy one:
- 0.75
When we read this, we can actually say “seventy-five hundredths.” So we can write it right away as:
- 75/100

Now we want to reduce this fraction.
- Find a number that divides evenly into both.
- In this case, 25 works.
So:
- 75 ÷ 25 = 3
- 100 ÷ 25 = 4
Our simplified fraction is:
- 3/4

Now, to turn this decimal into a percent, just move the decimal two places to the right.

A trick I tell my students is:
- D comes before P in the alphabet,
- so moving from decimal to percent means moving two places to the right.
(And if you’re going from percent to decimal, go two places to the left.)

- 0.75 → move two places → 75%

If we had 0.3567, move two places and it becomes:
- 35.67%
Yes, you can have a decimal in a percent!
Finding a Decimal or Fraction from a Percent

Now let’s try going from a percent.

Say we have:
- 35%
We know that’s 35 out of 100, so right away we can write:
- 35/100

We can simplify by dividing by 5:
- 35 ÷ 5 = 7
- 100 ÷ 5 = 20
So: - 7/20

To turn this into a decimal, move the decimal two places to the left:
- 0.35
Finding a Decimal or Percent from a Fraction

Now what if we start with a fraction?
Easy example:

- 1/10
We can see that multiplying the denominator by 10 gives us 100, so we also multiply the top by 10:
- 10/100 = 10%
Then to turn into a decimal, move two places left:
- 0.10 (or just 0.1)
Another easy example:

- 4/5
We know 5 × 20 = 100, so multiply the top by 20:
- 80/100 = 80%
Move two places left for the decimal:
- 0.8
When it doesn’t multiply evenly:

Take 2/3.
There’s nothing we can multiply by to get exactly 100, so we’ll divide.

A fraction is really just division:
- 2 ÷ 3
Doing long division gives us:
- 0.666… (repeating)

Move two places right to get the percent:
- 66.66…%
You can round to:
- 66.7% or even 67% depending on what’s asked.
