When students can identify a pattern or “rule” that is applied to different numbers, it sets them up well to better understand number sense and how different numbers are related! And did you know that this is the beginning of understanding ALGEBRA?!? So cool!
My name is Beth, and I am a full-time online math tutor. I am passionate about teaching students all over the world! I created this YouTube channel as a way to help parents when their kids need help with math homework.
A lot of the clients I work with tell me that they don’t understand some of the alternative methods that are being taught these days. Well, I’m here to help with that! I love that there are so many different methods for solving math problems. Students learn in a variety of ways, so why not have a variety of methods?!

We’re going to do a quick video about In and Out boxes. You may have seen these before. I’ll show you what they mean and how to complete them.

An In and Out box is a simple box that gives you an input number and—according to the rule listed—produces an output number.

For example, if the rule says add 4:
- Put in 4 → Output is 8
- Put in 0 → Output is 4
- Put in 1 → Output is 5
- Put in 6 → Output is 10

If the rule is subtraction:
- 10 becomes 5
- 8 becomes 3
- 5 becomes 0
- 9 becomes 4
- 45 becomes 40

You can also use multiplication. If the rule is multiply by 10, you simply multiply the input number by 10 to get the output.

Sometimes you’ll see In and Out boxes where an input is missing. For example, if the output is 40 and the rule is multiply by 10, you’d use the inverse operation—divide by 10—to find the missing input of 4.

Other times, the rule is missing but both the input and output numbers are given. In that case, you figure out the rule by comparing multiple pairs. For example, if “6 becomes 3,” the rule could be subtract 3 or divide by 2. Looking at the other pairs might reveal the rule—in this case, divide by 2.
