What Does “Percent” Mean?
The word percent means per 100 or out of 100. That’s why any percent can be written as a fraction with a denominator of 100.
Example:
- 25% = 25/100
- 80% = 80/100
How to Convert Percents to Fractions
Step 1: Write the Percent Over 100
Take the percent and put it over 100.
Step 2: Simplify the Fraction
Reduce the fraction to its simplest form if possible.
Examples:
- 50% → 50/100 → 1/2
- 30% → 30/100 → 3/10
- 496% → 496/100 → 124/25 → 4 24/25 (mixed number)
- 1,825% → 1,825/100 → 73/4 → 18 1/4 (mixed number)
- 12.5% → 12.5/100 → multiply top and bottom by 10 → 125/1000 → 1/8
✅ Tip: If the percent has a decimal, multiply by 10 (or 100) to remove it before simplifying.
How to Convert Fractions to Percents (Easy Cases)
If the denominator can easily become 100, just scale up the fraction.
Examples:
- 36/100 = 36%
- 492/100 = 492%
- 2/5 → multiply top & bottom by 20 → 40/100 → 40%
- 3/4 → multiply by 25 → 75/100 → 75%
- 1/10 → multiply by 10 → 10/100 → 10%
- 17/20 → multiply by 5 → 85/100 → 85%
How to Convert Fractions to Percents (Challenging Cases)
When the denominator doesn’t work nicely with 100, divide the numerator by the denominator to get a decimal. Then, move the decimal two places to the right to make it a percent.
Examples:
- 1/8 → 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125 → 12.5%
- 19/24 → 19 ÷ 24 = 0.7916… → 79.16% (repeating)
✅ Tip for remembering division setup:
Think of it like this: “The cowboy (numerator) rides the horse (denominator) into the saloon.” The numerator goes inside the division bracket; the denominator stays outside.
